Typically, they have horizontal window blinds that hang from the top of the frame. Depending on the window’s depth – the small area between the glass pane and the trim surrounding it – you’ll need to decide if you’re going to hang inside-mount blinds or outside-mount blinds. And when it comes to collecting measurements, your method will depend on the type of bay window in your home.

Measuring The Depth

Inside-mount blinds are hung in the flattest, largest area inside the frame of the window. When you measure your window’s depth, that is the area that you’ll need to find. Once you’ve located that area (it will be perpendicular to the window pane), use a tape measure to determine the depth.

Most inside-mount blinds require a window depth of ½”-3”, so if your window doesn’t have enough depth, you’ll have to go with outside-mount blinds. They are hung above the window on the wall. You don’t need to measure for depth if you’re planning to hang outside-mount blinds.

Measuring The Window Size

How you measure your bay window will depend on if you have a traditional or separated window. For separated ones, the measuring process is more straightforward, like a normal window.

Separated Bay

First, measure the width of the window from the edge you want the blinds to cover to the opposite side. Take this measurement at the top, middle and bottom of the glass and use the smallest measurement. This ensures that the blinds won’t scrape against the sides of the frame.

Next, repeat a similar process with the height, measuring it three times and choosing the largest number to ensure that the blinds will reach all the way to the bottom of your window. If you’re using outside-mount blinds, add 3-4” to the width measurement and 2” to the height measurement to accommodate the extra space required.

Traditional Bay

For traditional bay windows, the process is more complicated. We recommend the following:

Cut two cardboard squares, each side measuring the width of your chosen blinds as stated in the product measurements.
Place the cardboard squares in the corners of the adjacent windows so that the corner of each square barely touches the other. You might need to tape the squares to the ceiling directly above each window for more accurate measurements.
Mark where the inner edge of each square lies (the edge that is closer to the adjacent cardboard square).
Measure the width of each window from one pencil marking to the outside edge of the window. If your window is surrounded by adjacent windows, measure the width from one marking to the next. You’ll measure the height the same way as the separated bay windows.

On January 17, 2018 Angie’s List announced who has been named this year’s “winners of the coveted Angie’s List Super Service Award ” . Their yearly Super Service Award (SSA) honors service professionals who have maintained exceptional service ratings and reviews on Angie’s List in 2017. Blinded by Delight has also made it into the group of 20 percent of distinguished recipients who have won the award five years or more.

The award comes after months of continual effort and dedication to excellence. In order to be in the running for an SSA meant that our company had to maintain an “A” rating in overall grade, recent grade and review period grade. In our formative school years, an “A” grade or rating might have been all it took to impress the class, but for the Angie’s List SSA, it takes a little more than that. Winners must also be in good standing with Angie’s List, pass a background check, submit a current trade license attestation and abide by Angie’s List operational guidelines.

October Is National Window Covering Safety Month

October has been recognized as the National Window Covering Safety Month for the last 11 years. In the window covering industry, Blinded by Delight has always tried to keep child safety in the forefront of our product offerings. The annual awareness campaign is a joint effort of the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Both organizations strive to raise awareness of the hazards posed to children by window coverings with standard cords.

In an NBC News story dated October 11, 2014, we are reminded that “Almost every month, on average, another child dies from window cord strangulation, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). These cords are on the commission’s list of the top five “hidden hazards” in the home.”

The story goes on to say “Keeping children from being strangled to death is first and foremost for me when it comes to window covering cords,” said CPSC Chairman Elliot Kaye in a statement. “No matter the final approach – whether it is a comprehensive federal standard or a vastly improved voluntary standard – I feel the urgency to having this hazard addressed, so families with young children and businesses can have confidence in the safety of these products.”

The WCSC has a few basic cord-safety precautions that all parents and caregivers should be aware of:

In the custom window coverings industry, deaths should not be happening due to the availability of many child safe lifting options offered. Many vendors, like Hunter Douglas, try to take a proactive part in expanding the message of child safety in October and throughout the year. Their products offer options such as motorization (Powerise), cordless lift (Literise), continuous cord loops (Easyrise system) and the propriety cord system called the Ultra Glide. The Ultra Glide system is a pull and retract system that does not allow the cord to get any longer except when the shade is being opened.

Soft Fabric Shadings – Using Diffused Light To Protect Your Interiors

Many of our clients ask for window coverings that are energy efficient, that will open and close, yet give a soft diffused light. There are limited options for this type of window covering. Hunter Douglas has created two of the most fabulous options available with the Silhouette and Pirouette shadings. Another creative option is the Lafayette transitional shade called the Allure roller shade. All three of these products come in a light filtering or room dimming/darkening option.

Hunter Douglas says their “Silhouette is designed to offer a range of light control and privacy options with a broad selection of fabrics and materials, in a range of opacities from sheer to room darkening to opaque. The translucent fabrics that many of our products offer are specially engineered to diffuse harsh sunlight and draw it deeper into the room – dispersing the light to help illuminate your home naturally and reduce the need for artificial light. Other materials, such as our opaque fabrics, liners and roller shades, are more appropriate for room darkening when you want as little light as possible.”

The beautiful Hunter Douglas Pirouette shade is a soft Roman shade type product. When closed, the Hunter Douglas Pirouette looks like a Roman shade, however you can actually open it to give the diffused, soft light you are looking for. Hunter Douglas boasts “our Pirouette® shadings feature soft fabric vanes attached to a sheer backing that appear to be floating, drawing natural light into your room.” The sheer backing is used to protect the interior when the shade is opened.

The LaFayette company has created another innovative soft shading that is more like a roller shade yet borrows from the look of a Hunter Douglas Silhouette. Lafayette proudly states “It’s not a shade and it’s not a sheer; yet it raises, lowers and offers an almost endless variety of light control and viewing options. Go from absolute privacy to softly filtered light or full on sunlight in just a matter of seconds. These transitions of light are created with dual layers of horizontal fabric segments alternating between sheer and semi-opaque or opaque fabric.”

Honeycomb Shades: The Most Energy Efficient Option For Your Windows

Most people don’t realize that up to 50% of a home’s heating and cooling energy can be lost through its windows. Energy efficiency, in summer and winter, is one the most important benefits that clients request when we are looking at their window coverings.

Our first answer to this question is always a honeycomb or cellular shade. Either name is used to describe this beautiful product that can look like a honeycomb created by a bee, thus the name. Every window covering vendor has their own version of a honeycomb or cellular shade with different cell sizes, numbers of cells and opacities. Each vendor’s shade has a different energy efficiency based on these features.

The most important feature for energy efficiency in a honeycomb/cellular shade is the number of cells or pockets it has. For instance, the Hunter Douglas Alustra® Duette® Architella® honeycomb shades can have up to 3 cells inside of a main cell. This shade is the most energy efficient product on the market because the cells create up to 5 pockets or layers that act as insulation in the window. The cell actually traps air in the distinct pockets.

Cellular shades come in four opacity levels: sheer, translucent, semi opaque and opaque. There are also various cell sizes to fit any window such as 3/8″, 3/4″, 1 1/4″ and up. Cells shades are also available with 2 shades in one blind allowing for maximum UV protection as well as various light control benefits.

All vendors have a Top-Down/Bottom-Up feature that offers a more versatile approach to light control. Lower from the top, raise from the bottom, or find somewhere in-between for the perfect balance of privacy and light control. This is a great solution for a bathroom or bedroom where you want to see out but need privacy below a certain height.

Cellular shades can also be used for large windows, expansive sliding doors or other vertical openings. The beauty of using cellular shades in these types of challenging situations is that the stack of the cell shade is very minimal when opened; less than 6-8″ wide in most cases even up to 10′ wide.

One of the last (and our most favorite) features of the cell shades is power; be it battery or plug in motorization. Whether you control your window treatments with a mobile device, wall switch or a remote control, you can do this from your favorite chair at home, work or anywhere in the house. Simply set your blinds to movie mode, work mode, or 8 a.m. mode with the touch of a button, all without leaving the comfort of your seat. It’s easy, fun and smart—all with smooth operation.

As you can see, the honeycomb is a very versatile solution for most windows. They can even be used on most any odd shaped, arched or sloped windows in any room of the house. While the honeycomb design is praised for its superior energy efficiency, its unique shape, interesting fabrics, rich colors and overall aesthetic are nothing short of beautiful.

How To Measure Your Windows For A Price Quote On Blinds, Shades, Shutters or Drapery

Measuring your windows seems like an easy project to complete, but some people would rather have a little help. Luckily for you, when you work with Blinded by Delight, we will take care of this for you. We will, however, ask you to provide the basic information to get started with an estimate for you. Photographs are always welcome as well.

The most basic information is the width and the height. The width is always first, from left to right. The height is last, from top to bottom. This will matter in pricing your product because all vendors price by the width first and height last. An inverted measurement can actually affect the cost, so it is important that measurements be provided correctly.

Here are a few other things you will want to know before before you start:

These are all items that a window covering specialist looks for when measuring for blinds, shades, shutters, and drapery. The answers to these questions will help the professional have a better understanding of what items will fit best in your windows. They will determine if they must fit inside your opening or be mounted outside this opening on the wall.

Some of the newest and most common features of windows, we are finding today, are tilt-in windows. Tilt-in windows provide an interesting challenge when a client wants shutters. The trim will need to fit outside the opening to allow the window to open properly and allow for the screens to be removed and cleaned. Most clients prefer a trim that fits inside the window, allowing the shutter to not protrude into the room, but with tilt-in windows, that is virtually impossible. The trim must be mounted outside the opening, sitting on the window sill.

There are also the pesky crank windows we see in a lot of homes. These cranks can impede the bottom rail of a window covering from closing properly or giving complete blackout or privacy. If you want shutters, this crank must also be taken into account to allow the window to work correctly when opening and closing.

As you can see, there are many things to take into account when measuring for windows. The most we want you to do is to give us the estimated width (first) and height (last), and we can take it from there. This will allow our window covering specialist to provide you with an approximate price estimate if you know what type of product you would like.

Budgeting For Beautiful Custom Drapery Or Top Treatments: What To Know

Finishing your windows with custom drapery or a decorative top treatment can be a daunting task. There seem to be so many questions that need to be answered.

The following are just a few that we hear:

All are great questions, but it’s basically pretty simple by using the following formulas:

When budgeting for drapery, we take into account the fabric, linings and interlining, shipping for the fabric, decorative trim, custom labor, decorative or traverse rods, and installation. The basic formulation for custom drapery with a standard fabric of $50 per yard is about $150-$200 per lineal foot. The amount of layers per window will change the pricing as well.

For example, if you have a standard 72″ x 72″ window with 1 standard lined panel, that is 6 feet. Add at least 1 foot for the stacking of the drapery. It is even safer to add 2 feet if you want a more open view-though on your window. This window will cost between $1050-$1400 using 7 lineal feet of space. Please keep in mind that all drapery will vary due to the final selection of the items that we listed above.

Top treatments take into account the same information, however they are priced between $75-$100 per lineal foot depending on the design. The same window with 7 lineal feet will cost between $525-$700. This can be reduced if the design is a simple pattern or can be increased if more elaborate.

What’s your budget for window coverings?

It is important to know what to budget for window coverings if you are updating your home or building a new one. Whether you are replacing basic 1″ vinyl blinds or those old 1″ or 2″ aluminum blinds its a great question. If you are building a new home remember to leave an allowance for blinds, shades, shutters or drapery.

Most window coverings are priced the size of your window with 35″ x 72″ being an average window covering size. If you have a 70″ x 70″ window you can count that as two windows. Blinds, shades, shutters and drapery will range in price based on the features, quality, manufacturer and warranty you select. 2″ Basic imported Faux blind for this size window start at approximately $75 per window. The pricing will increase using routeless blinds, cordless lift and larger louver sizes to name a few upgrades. There are many options of window coverings such as cellular shades, roman shades, fabric shades, vertical solutions, shutters and drapery. The pricing for these items increase based on materials, opacities and upgrades selected. A Roman shade or cellular shade for the same average window will usually start at two to three times more than the basic blind price, $150- $225+ for that same window.

If you are building a new home it is best to budget 1-2% of the value of the home if purchasing basic Faux blinds. If you are using any fabric type of window coverings such as cellular shades, roman shades, woven woods or soft shadings, it is best to budget 2-4% of your homes’ value. This pricing will increase to 4-6% if using motorization, shutters or draperies. So, when building your dream home, don’t forget one of the most important areas to budget for: the window coverings. We all need a mixture of privacy, light control, or added beauty to our homes.

Shutters, shutters, shutters… We are hearing more and more about plantation shutters recently. There are many questions that we hear almost daily. Should I use Wood or Composite shutters to upgrade my home? Do I get trim with my shutters? Will shutters fit into my budget? Do I use them all over the house? Do I still need drapery with them? Are they a good insulator? Will they block my view?

Everyone has great questions about shutters. Let me answer just a few of these most commonly asked questions.

First of all, shutters are one of the only window coverings that will permanently stay in your home when you sell it. All other coverings can be easily removed including drapery. Wood or composite shutters are an upgrade to the home. These shutters are like putting fine furniture on your windows due to the trim moulding that is included in the pricing. There are many options of trim to select from based on the window type such as tilt in windows or standard double hung windows. The finished out trim is a large part of the beauty of the shutters.

Budgeting for shutters is an important part of most clients decision. Shutters are one of the only window coverings that are priced by the square foot. A typical rectangular window of 35″ x 72″ will price at approximately $350- $450+ depending on if you select wood or composite shutters, standard tilt or hidden tilt and the specific manufacturer. These a just to a few of the decisions that need to be made when selecting shutters.

If you want to use shutters in your entire home, the pricing will be based on the sizes and amount of windows that you have. Pricing for an entire home will range from $5,500 to $9,500+ if you have between 15-25 basic sized rectangular windows. Many people will use shutters on the front windows of their home or in specific area they would like to showcase.

Shutters are a stand alone window covering. They do not need drapery or other treatments added to them. They are an excellent insulator and will save you money on your HVAC bills immediately after installation. Due to divided louvers, shutters are also a great way to direct light, open up your view with large louver sizes and keep that unwanted UV rays off your furniture, rugs and artwork.
